چکیده

Sustained resonance in a linear oscillator is achievable with a drive whose constant frequency matches the resonant frequency of the oscillator. But in oscillators with nonlinear restoring forces such as the pendulum, Duffing and Duffing-Van der Pol oscillator, the resonant frequency changes as the amplitude changes, so a constant frequency drive results in a beat oscillation instead of sustained resonance. Duffing-type nonlinear oscillators can be driven into sustained resonance, called autoresonance, when the drive frequency is swept in time to match the changing resonant frequency of the oscillator. We find that near-optimal drive linear sweep rates for autoresonance can be estimated from the beat oscillation resulting from constant frequency excitation. Specifically, a least squares estimate of the TeagerKaiser instantaneous frequency versus time for the beat response to a stationary drive provides a near-optimal estimate of the nonstationary drive linear sweep rate needed to sustain resonance in the pendulum, Duffing and Duffing-Van der Pol oscillators. We confirm these predictions with model-based numerical simulations. An Preprint submitted to Journal of Sound and Vibration 1 September 2009 advantage of the beat method of estimating optimal drive sweep rates for maximal autoresonant response is that no model is required so experimentally generated beat oscillation data can be used for systems where no model is available.

Energy-based theory of autoresonance phenomena: Application to Duffing-like systems

A general energy-based theory of autoresonance (self-sustained resonance) in low-dimensional nonautonomous systems is presented. The equations that together govern the autoresonance solutions and excitations are derived with the aid of a variational principle concerning the power functional. These equations provide a feedback autoresonance-controlling mechanism. The theory is applied to Duffing...

Inducing chaos by resonant perturbations: theory and experiment.

We propose a scheme to induce chaos in nonlinear oscillators that either are by themselves incapable of exhibiting chaos or are far away from parameter regions of chaotic behaviors. Our idea is to make use of small, judiciously chosen perturbations in the form of weak periodic signals with time-varying frequency and phase, and to drive the system into a hierarchy of nonlinear resonant states an...

Use of the Teager-Kaiser energy operator for condition monitoring of a wind turbine gearbox

This paper deals with the condition monitoring of a wind turbine gearbox under varying operating conditions, which cause nonstationarity. The gearbox vibration signals are decomposed into a set of monocomponent signals using the Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) method. The Teager-Kaiser Energy Operator (TKEO) in combination with an energy separation method is also presented as an alternative ...

Power Series -Aftertreatment Technique for Nonlinear Cubic Duffing and Double-Well Duffing Oscillators

Modeling of large amplitude of structures such as slender, flexible cantilever beam and fluid-structure resting on nonlinear elastic foundations or subjected to stretching effects often lead to strongly nonlinear models of Duffing equations which are not amendable to exact analytical methods. In this work, explicit analytical solutions to the large amplitude nonlinear oscillation systems of cub...
